The main points: 

 

1. Don't throw it...release it.

 

2. Simply pull it back, release it and let gravity do the work.

 

3. Speed is crucial! You want it to barely make it over the hook. If you throw it too hard, you don't stand a chance.

 

4. Ideally, you want to arc your throw. Right to left or left to right...the choice is yours -- but you want the ring to hit the hook from the side.
